Description

From the forested slopes of Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs to the limestone plateau of the White Peak, this area has superb countryside to explore plus a number of attractive towns and villages.  High moorland offers excellent walking that can be as challenging as you choose – from a relatively easy ridge walk to a full day trek across the peat-covered plateau of Kinder Scout.  Less arduous is the patchwork landscape of green fields and stone walls of the White Peak, centred on Tideswell and its impressive church known as the ‘Cathedral of the Peak’.  For a day out with a difference experience the underground world of caves at Castleton or hire a bike to cycle through tunnels on the Monsal Trail.  No visit is complete without seeing Buxton’s two architectural masterpieces – the Crescent and the Dome – and a visit to the town’s lovely Opera House, home of the acclaimed Buxton Festival.  Or perhaps take a train journey from Buxton or Glossop into Manchester for shopping or a night out at the theatre.
