Holiday in this romantic retreat in the Peak District, ideal for couples looking for an intrepid escape. Nestled at the foot of the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, Matlock Bath is a unique village on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Discover the long streets of shops, riverside walks, and why this beautiful village has earned the nickname ‘Little Switzerland’, then return to your charming cottage. Head out for a hike among the excellent walking routes around the Derwent Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the external steps down from the parking area to the entrance of this lovely property, set over two levels. Store coats and boots on the porch and wander through to the traditional country cottage kitchen with characterful exposed beams. The kitchen has all you need to whip up some romantic meals. Get snug in the lounge enjoying the plush seating, a warming gas fire and a Smart TV, making this the perfect place to curl up after hiking or cycling in the hills. Head up the cottage-style steps to the first floor where you will find a double bedroom with views over the garden and mature trees and a bright, contemporary bathroom. Step into the garden surrounding the cottage and sit on the raised patio with seating to make the most of the wonderful views.

Walk or cycle the High Peak Trail, which begins in nearby Cromford (1 mile). Along the way, you can climb the famous Black Rocks or take one of the walking circuits through the woodland. Derbyshire is famous for Bakewell Pudding, so head to Bakewell (10 miles) and indulge in a real treat. There are plenty of walking opportunities from Bakewell, including along the Monsal Trail or to the magnificent Chatsworth House. For something a little different, you should spend time exploring the nearby Crich Tramway Village (5.5 miles).

This is a gem of a place to stay. Well equipped (there is even a proper coffee machine, although no dishwasher) and very comfortable with excellent furnishing, on a quiet and notably narrow little road overlooking much of Matlock Bath. Beautiful walks nearby, and plenty to see and do. We recommend The Family Tree in Whatstandwell to eat out, and thRead moree walk along the Cromford Canal. Hide

A sweet character cottage nestled in a hilltop location. Lovely tree top views. Access by car a must as walking into town is a bit of a work out.
