Property code: OC-DCLIT

A unique little 'castle', built as a nurseryman’s cabin about 150 years ago, this delightful retreat has been renovated to become an enticing holiday home. Sleeping three guests, the two-bedroom hideaway is in the hamlet of Darley Hillside, close to Darley Dale, 3 miles from Matlock. From here, lace up your walking boots and head off into the picturesque Peak District to follow footpaths, hike up mountains and discover beauty spots. Head into Matlock to spend afternoons browsing in shops and stopping in cafes for cream teas. Catch a steam train from Matlock to Rowsley to take in the scenery from the comfort of a carriage. Visit Bakewell, 6 miles away, to visit the market and taste the famous pudding.

Follow the steps down to the castle then let yourselves in to find a holiday retreat with a reverse-level design. A comfortable double bedroom and a single bedroom are situated on the ground floor, together with a family shower room. The lounge/kitchen/diner, with its scenic views, is on the first floor of the castle, where you can fire up the wood burner and settle in its cosy glow to watch TV or a DVD. The kitchen area is well equipped for preparing holiday meals and there is a dining table beside a Juliet balcony with French doors that can be opened up on fine days. There is also a shed adjacent to the castle with freezer and washing machine.

This holiday home has a gorgeous roof terrace, with patio furniture, where you can dine out on sunny days or have a drink as the sun goes down and soak up the scenery.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 single
  • 1 family shower room, with basin and WC
  • Electric oven, induction hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher
  • Washing machine and freezer in shed
  • Wood burner (starter pack of logs provided)

  • TV and DVD player
  • Regret no WiFi

This property is in an idyllic setting with a roof terrace offering superb views over the local countryside. Its a haven for wildlife including a family of badgers. It is secluded but close to all the nearby towns and sights. Robert the owner lives next door and he is superbly welcoming and friendly but never intrusive. We absolutely loved our stayRead more and would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a secluded getaway. Hide

Great location. Comfortable. Good value. Couple of minor things could do with replacing. Property could just do with a bit of a spring clean.

Absolutely lovely property. Very warm welcome from the owner, Robert. Location was just perfect, down a long green track, very secluded, surrounded by beautiful, wild woods and hills. Lots of wildlife. The cottage itself was very warm and cosy. Quiet and restorative atmosphere. Access to the view from the roof was an added bonus.

A surprisingly lovely secluded property, ideal for anyone who loves wildlife. It is well equipped and has the little extras such as fresh flowers and biscuits left for us.

All was very good. One constructive and not critical comment the property would benefit having a freezer or a refrigerator with a freezer compartment.

We had a lovely week in our little castle. The wildlife you can view from the windows and roof tops is outstanding. Very comfortable and had everything we needed. The only thing i would say if that you should make people aware of the amount of steps from the car park to the house especially with luggage etc. I would have packed very differently. AlRead moreso the washing machine and dryer are in a shed not within the house which again should be mentioned. Hide
