Enjoy a romantic retreat to the Peak District, staying in this charming end-of-terrace worker’s cottage in Wirksworth that simply oozes character. It’s ideal for an outward-bound couple who want rustic good looks in their comfortable accommodation, but also easy access to the National Park and the rest of Derbyshire.

Rustic features, fixtures and fittings have been carefully curated in this cute house to blend easily with furnishings old and new to make for a really comfortable stay in sophisticated surrounds. Everything maximises the space, with a cosy lounge/diner complete with a wood burner for cooler months, through a quirky sliding door from the compact kitchen. The relaxing king-size bedroom and shower room are up the rather steep cottage stairs. There’s no garden at this home from home, but you can always sit on the bench to the front of the house for an early morning cuppa or sundowner after the day’s excursions. On-street parking is subject to availability, but there’s also a permit for limited free parking.

Get to know the cobbled centre of this market town, full of cafes, galleries and boutique shopping. Interesting towns further afield include Bakewell and Buxton (both within 20 miles). The former is obviously best known for its Bakewell Pudding and pretty streets. If stately homes and gardens are more your thing, then Chatsworth House (15 miles) and Haddon Hall (11 miles) both make fantastic days out. But walking will surely be a big draw in the Peaks area and multiple trails and footpaths head into the lovely countryside from around the town. Just to the north, you can follow the River Derwent to the historic village of Matlock Bath, and from there a bit further to Matlock (both within 5 miles).
