Stay in the delightful village of Ashford in the water in this pretty Peak District country cottage, bring your boots and enjoy walks from the doorstep then come home to a warming wood burner.
Enjoy a slice of village life in this gorgeous location in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Ashford has a fascinating and long history having been first recorded in the Domesday Book and is considered to be the prettiest village in the Peak District. The cottage offers numerous walks straight from the doorstep, with ridge trails offering glorious views over the rolling countryside around Ashford and Bakewell, along the Tissington Trail to Monsal Head and Dale, or further afield to uplands of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor in the wilder Dark Peak. Also within walking distance are some of England's finest noble estates, including the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth House with gardens by Capability Brown, and the Duke of Rutland’s Haddon Hall dating from the Tudor period. Alternatively, meander through the shops and cafes of Bakewell, home to a weekly market and the renowned Bakewell Pudding. Its twin spa town, Buxton, is only 20 minutes away and offers a lively arts scene including the opera house.
The cottage dates to medieval times and until the 1930s was on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate; thoroughly refurbished in 2018, it retains many period features. The hall way welcomes you with plenty of space to kick off boots and hang your gear. Next door, the lounge is furnished with comfy armchairs and a cosy couch just waiting for you to settle in and put your feet up with a good book or in front of the TV and the warming wood-burner. For much of the day, sun streams through the large south-facing window, showing off the golden tones of the stunning gritstone fireplace. The separate kitchen/diner is stylishly-decorated and well-equipped, providing everything you need to rustle up a good meal including double oven and gas hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Enjoy lazy breakfasts at the large kitchen table planning the day’s activities ahead. There is a handy downstairs toilet with washbasin.
Upstairs you can enjoy panoramic views over the village and hills beyond while lying in the king-sized bed or sitting in the characterful window seat. There is plenty of storage in the beautiful Victorian sandalwood dresser and wardrobe, and room for your luggage on the linen chest.
The high-spec bathroom has a new suite with Victorian-style towel rail, large sink, over-bath shower and full-sized bath for soaking after your day’s adventures. Light pours in the roof window through which you can gaze at stars or sky depending on time of day.
The second bedroom is a twin with views over gardens towards hills and fields. The cottage also has its own small covered courtyard area with space to sit and enjoy a coffee in the morning for those who like some fresh air. There is on road parking available directly outside the cottage. Dogs are welcome but please note, there is no garden at the cottage.
Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.
