Inside, the open-plan social space has original beams, and a wood burner within a striking stone fireplace. Cook up a storm in the farmhouse-style kitchen, eat at the bar-style dining suite, then curl up on soft seating to watch your favourite TV programmes. A handy wet room is on the ground floor – perfect for freshening-up as you return home each day – while upstairs the main bathroom has a free-standing bath and is conveniently close to the two bedrooms. Choose between a peaceful double and a pretty twin room. Step into the garden and the bordering stream creates a calming soundtrack, while the patio and lawned area provide space to unwind – watch out for the owner’s horses, which are stabled and grazed nearby. Stroll into Castleton (0.5 miles) for a fine choice of cafes, shops and pubs. Famous as the Hope Valley home of Derbyshire Blue John stone, the village is also a great place to pick up trails to Winnats Pass (1.5 miles) and Mam Tor (2 miles), and to explore Peveril Castle. Head to Padley Gorge (8 miles) to hike among streams, boulders and waterfalls, or climb aboard a boat at Speedwell Cavern (0.5 miles) and cruise through historic mining tunnels. For contrast drive 10 miles to the spa town of Buxton, famed for its elegant architecture, Pavilion Gardens and Opera House.
