This gorgeous stone cottage on a small complex of farm properties is the ideal accommodation option for families or small groups of friends in search of the perfect slice of country life. This welcoming cottage in the pretty village of Foolow is the ideal Peak District retreat. Spend your days rambling across the delightfully named Silly Dale or soaking up some cultural grandeur at Chatsworth House, and your evenings rubbing shoulders with the locals in the village pub or warming your toes by the cottage’s wood burner.

Showcasing quirky design features throughout, this lovely cottage sleeps six people over three bedrooms and welcomes three dogs. After a day exploring the national park, come home and head to the spacious open-plan living room/kitchen/diner. Enjoy a good chat with your nearest and dearest while you cook up a storm in the kitchen area, and then gather everyone around the dining table for a sociable dinner. Alternatively, head out to the garden, light up the BBQ and dine alfresco. After dinner, retire to the living area, put on your favourite TV show and stretch out in front of the soft glow of the wood burner. At the end of the day, there are three lovely bedrooms upstairs to choose from.

There’s a lovely 3-mile circular hike from Foolow to Silly Dale that leads you along rural lanes and flowery dales towards Great Hucklow, where you can take a lunch break in the village’s pretty pub. Alternatively, you can spend a wonderful afternoon exploring Chatsworth House (7.5 miles). The incredible home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire showcases works of art that span some 4,000 years. Don’t forget to stop off at the estate’s award-winning farm shop and grab some goodies before you leave.

Shippon Cottage is in a picturesque location with easy access to the Monsal Trail and Bakewell. The cottage was clean and cosy with everything we needed for the week. We had a lovely Sunday lunch in the Bull Inn at Foolow and also walked to Eyam where there are a good selection of places to eat and drink. Penny is a lovely host and our lab made friRead moreends with Digby the lab too. Hide

We had a brilliant holiday and the location was absolutely stunning. The cottage was a dream and very comfortable although the 2nd double bedroom is a bit tight. Bathroom was lovely with the biggest bath we all fought over. Our three terriers had the best holiday ever with lots of walks from the doorstep. Great weather with lovely villages to exploRead morere. Would not hesitate to return. Hide
