With Christmas just around the corner, the whole country is gearing up for weeks of festivities, donning some jingle bells and preparing to eat more turkey and mince pies than you could shake a Santa hat at. The Peak District is no exception, and there’s certainly no shortage of options when it comes to Christmas markets to explore. With that in mind, here’s our seasonal selection of the best around to put you in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year…
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th November
The beautiful town of Bakewell gets into the festive spirit over the last weekend of November with a market spanning both days. Many of the traders from the town’s infamous Monday market will be selling their wares, joined by other craft and gift stalls plus a variety of seasonal food and drink from the local area. There will also be the Christmas tree light switch on and plenty of other entertainment to keep the whole family amused.
17th November to 5th December
Providing the backdrop for some classic films, including Pride and Prejudice and The Princess Bride, the spectacular Chatsworth Estate will be filled with festive cheer in November. The prestigious grounds play host to over 100 stalls, each offering a multitude of seasonal produce, handcrafted goods and gifts suitable for everyone. An array of hot and cold food will be available for purchase, and outdoor bars will be selling beers and mulled cider.
Saturday 18th November
The big Christmas light switch on will have the Peak Shopping Village glistening on November 4th, just in time for the traditional Christmas markets that same weekend. With free entry and free parking, it means there’s all the more money to spend on gifts for others, or even a treat for yourself. Come December, the night market will really start to ring in the festive bells. On three consecutive Friday evenings (the 2nd, 9th and 16th) during the lead up to the big day, there’ll be festive stalls to explore as well as the usual shops.
Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December
A garden marquee filled with seasonal stalls, Father Christmas in his grotto and the sumptuous surroundings of Buxton to boost the spirits – it doesn’t get much more festive than that!
Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd December
On the south east border of the Peak District, the Victorian Christmas Weekend is held on Hall Leys Park in the centre of Matlock. Family-orientated, you’ll find fairground rides, fireworks and free entertainment, all in incased in an atmosphere fit for any Yuletide celebration.
Sunday 19th November
On the eastern fringes of the Peak District, just a short distance from Chatsworth, the pretty market town of Chesterfield is set to host its annual Christmas light switch on and festive market. With events underway from noon until nighttime, there's plenty to keep Christmas spirit high and entertain attendees of all ages, including competitions, rides, games and, of course, fireworks and festivities.
